Nitric oxide (N-O) is a gas synthesized from the amino acid L-arginine by a group of enzymes known as nitric oxide synthases (NOS). Nitric oxide transmits signals from one cell to another and is often referred to as the “Miracle Molecule” because it enables the trillions of cells in our body to communicate with each other while enhancing blood flow, oxygen, and nutrient uptake. 

Nitric oxide was named “Molecule of the Year” in 1992 by the journal Science. Three U.S. scientists, Robert F. Furchgott, PhD; Louis J. Ignarro, PhD; and Ferid Murad, MD, PhD received the Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine for their discovery of nitric oxide as a signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system.
